$50k Distributed by Strategic Philanthropy Students

Expanding from a 1-hour honors colloquium last year, Strategic Philanthropy was offered as a 3-hour class this semester, led by Dr. Jim Orr.

Created by Dr. Jim Litton and Dr. Jack Griggs in the Griggs Center for Entrepreneurship and Philanthropy, the class offers students the opportunity to practically apply the community-minded business skills they’ve learned at ACU and offer significant financial help to charities in the Abilene area.

A group of fourteen students was given the task of choosing how to distribute an anonymous $50,000 donation among local non-profits. The students spent the semester researching and evaluating the organizations and deciding how to best distribute the funds.

The class hosted a Giving Ceremony on Monday, December 5, 2016 where 7 local non-profits were awarded various amounts:

  • JTC X-Change: $850
  • Friends For Life: $5,000
  • Harmony Family Services: $5,000
  • The Texas Ramp Project: $7,750
  • REACH For a Difference: $7,900
  • The Texas State Technical College Foundation: $11,000
  • United Methodist Service Center and Food Pantry: $12,500
